Caution, but no reason to panic: Spotted Lantern Fly Update

(Updated: Sept. 22, 2022, 7:44 a.m.)

Dear all,

The Spotted Lantern Fly (SLF) has been found in NC. But that does not mean your vineyard is at a loss or even under a threat! It is important to understand that currently SLF populations are only found in very isolated instances in NC.

While there might be the possibility for SLF to spread over time, for this season (2022) the threat that you have an infested vineyard is minimal!

However, harvest time is also the time to scout for SLF in your vineyards. What you should do is scout for signs of SLF after or during harvest.

NC State Entomologists Jim Walgenbach and Hannah Levenson have developed this Fact Sheet for you all to give some guidance and what to do and what do avoid. Find additional identification and monitoring guidelines at the Penn State Extension Homepage.

Please reach out to Hannah Levenson, Jim Walgenbach or myself if you have further questions.

Happy harvest,

Mark
